Have you ever dreamed of penning the Great American Novel or writing poetry on par with the poems produced by wordsmiths like Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson? One of the wonderful things about creative writing is that anyone can do it. Without any formal training, countless writers have written astonishing novels and poems. Does the idea of sharing your writing scare you? No problem! Innumerable writers have written things that they never showed to anyone, but simply tucked away in a private drawer or a folder on their computer. If you’ve never written fiction, poetry, personal essays, a screenplay, or even a song, why not give it a shot? There are many benefits of creative writing for seniors.

It exercises your imagination

How long has it been since you last flexed your creative muscles? Especially if you choose to write fiction (in the form of a short story, novel, or poem), creative writing will give you a chance to be wildly imaginative. You can write about anything you like. So whether you’ve always had an interest in Victorian London, apocalyptic sci-fi, or the Wild West, now is the time to indulge in your passions. You can invent complex characters, settings, and plots. And no matter what form of creative writing you choose, you can have fun playing with words.

It can improve mental dexterity and emotional well-being

Creative writing can help keep your mind active and engaged, which may improve your brain stamina and mental vigilance. Depending on what you choose to write, it can also be beneficial for emotional well-being. According to Resources to Recover, many therapists recommend that people write daily to improve their mental well-being. Some recommended techniques include writing in a journal to express gratitude, to delve into difficult emotions, or to explore future goals and possible obstacles. Creative writing is an opportunity to tell your story in your own words, without fear of judgment.

It can reduce stress

Many people view creative writing as an escape. When the world is feeling a bit overwhelming and stressful, you can escape to an imaginary world of your own creation. In many cases, this can help reduce the writer’s stress levels. If you use writing to benefit your emotional state, you may also lower your stress. Some therapists also recommend writing about positive events in your past or memories of achievement or perseverance. Doing so can boost your self-esteem and self-confidence.

It can provide social engagement

If you choose to keep your writing private, you certainly won’t be alone. However, it can also be enjoyable to share your work with others. You could join a writer’s group, submit to a literary magazine, give copies to friends and family, or (if you wrote a poem or song) share your writing online. Sharing creative writing with other people may help you get to know them in a different way. You can share important parts of your life, and learn about each other.

There are many benefits of creative writing for seniors, but more than anything, remember that creative writing is fun! All you need is paper, a pen, and a little imagination.

Meet Author
John Schwartz

John will tell you he has lived well, loved often, cried frequently, hated little, cherished the present, ignored regrets, and often lost sight of the destination while relishing the trip. Here’s the message he follows.

Do what thy manhood bids thee do, from none but self expect applause; He noblest lives and noblest dies who makes and keeps his self-made laws. –Richard Francis Burton

John has lived and worked in the USA, Latin America, Asia, Europe and Fiji. He was one of the first American businessmen to enter China after the Cultural Revolution. In the early 1990’s John and his family established a successful English/Chinese language publishing company based in Hong Kong. John’s poetry placed first in the 71st Annual Writers Digest National Writing Competition.

His winning eleven-line poem was not about love, broken hearts, or death... it was about a skyscraper in Hong- Kong

Schwartz’s first novel In The Shadow of Babylon rose to the top of Amazon Kindle’s Action/Adventure list.

KIRKUS Review wrote…“an epoch-spanning thriller. The prose is something to behold… the author deftly weaves the romantic experiences of a pre-historical shepherd into an extended homily in the best page- turner fashion… evocative… lyrical, mystical and shocking… A wonderfully written, provocative novel.”

Robert Pinsky (U.S. Poet Laureate 1997-2000) called John’s writing—“… vivid … gritty ... vigorous.”
